23.2.2017 | 2016 was a record year in terms of women applying for voluntary military service: an astonishing 842 women applied. It is almost 50 women more than the previous applicant record during the 20 year history of women's voluntary military service.

19.4.2021 | The threshold for applying to the voluntary military service for women will be lower as the E-service becomes available on 20 April 2021. The aim is to make applying easier and to increase the number of applications to the voluntary military service for women. The possibility for submitting the application via the E-service has already increased the number of applications submitted for the other tasks available in the Finnish Defence Forces.

8.12.2022 | The start of the annual application round to women’s voluntary military service has been advanced. This change is due to a new Act on women’s voluntary military service which entered into force in June. As a consequence, applications must be submitted as early as 15 January at the latest.

9.3.2022 | The application period for women’s voluntary military service closed on 1 March 2022. This year, a total of 1588 women applied to conscript service. This was the first time applications were submitted online through the E-service. Women who complete military service are and will be an important asset for the Defence Forces.

21.1.2025 | The application period for women’s voluntary military service closed on 15 January 2025. A total of 1448 women applied to military service.

13.8.2024 | From 15 August to 13 December 2024, the Defence Forces’ regional offices will organise call-ups as specified in the Conscription Act. In Lapland, Uusimaa and Häme, selection events for women’s voluntary military service will be organised in conjunction with the call-ups.

12.8.2025 | 15 Aug. - 15 Dec. 2025, call-ups in accordance with the Conscription Act will be organized by the Defence Forces regional offices. This year, male citizens born in 2007 will be summoned to call-ups.

5.11.2025 | Lively Sentry 25, led by the Guard Jaeger Regiment, will be organised from 27 November to 4 December 2025. The exercise will be conducted in the areas of East Uusimaa, Kymenlaakso and Päijät-Häme.

16.12.2025 | On 15 December, the 2025 call-up was completed. Altogether 76,29 percent of the male Finnish nationals of the age group was ordered to service. Since the previous year, the number has increased by 0,22 percentage points.

20.2.2026 | The Finnish Defence Forces will participate this spring’s key arctic exercise series during 9.–20.3.2026. The Norwegian-led Cold Response 26 -exercise will convene up to c. 7,500 soldiers in Finland and c. 25,000 soldiers in Norway from altogether 14 nations. In Finland, the exercise activity will focus on the Finnish Defence Forces’ exercise area at Rovajärvi but forces will be on the move across northern Finland.

13.1.2026 | This Autumn, special forces training in Utti Jaeger Regiment attracted more applicants than ever. The selection tests for those applying for paratrooper training and those applying to train as a contractual military personnel on the Defence Forces special forces course will be held on 19-23 January 2026.

12.2.2026 | The Army will exercise local defence during 20.2.–6.3.2026. The series of exercises will be participated by altogether up to c. 3,500 soldiers, a number of other authorities, as well as business sector organisations from across Finland.

22.12.2025 | The next contingent of conscripts will begin their military service on Monday, 5 January, 2026. Approximately 9500 conscripts will start their service in the Army brigade-level units.
